Glastonbury Area Information - Balancing the Preservation Of Natural Resources And Evolving Community Life
Started in 1636 with only 30 families, Glastonbury was bought from the local Native American Chief, Sowheag, for 12 yards of trading cloth. As the town grew, it became possible for the community to support itself, and by 1693 Glastonbury was officially its own town. Started in 1655, Glastonbury is home to the oldest continuously operating ferry in the United States, and it still runs between South Glastonbury and Rocky Hill everyday.
The history of Glastonbury continued with an integral part in the World Wars. During both wars, Glastonbury factories supplied leather and woolen goods to the military of Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy and the US.
